Stress is fundamentally controlled within the brain by the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The most common form of ANS testing is called heart rate variability (HRV). It is measured indirectly, because one cannot measure ANS state directly in the brain. The ANS controls heart rate (pulse) and very subtle beat-to-beat variations at rest. Sophisticated software algorithms can reduce a 5-minute EKG reading (about 300 beats) to accurately quantify the core ANS sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest/restorative) components.
To conduct ANS stress research with HRV, Inmedix uses the ANS Neuroscan prototype powered by elite Omegawave Ltd software. Over the next two years, Inmedix will reengineer, repurpose and redesign the prototype into a tool specifically suited to the clinical setting. The tool will provide a variety of traditional and proprietary outputs potentially applicable to guide superior clinical outcomes for patients with autoimmune and other diseases affected by immune function. FDA 510(k) clearance and UK CE marking are anticipated by late 2018.
